Ideal qualities in a hero: Sense of humor (88 percent), honesty and integrity (82 percent), kindness (71 percent), and confidence (69 percent) top the list. Again, not a shocker. But status, wealth and anything relating to dominance/control were not ranked highly at all. Shhh… don’t tell all those dukes and billionaire heroes.
On diversity. Fifty-seven percent of respondents said they read romances with diverse characters (defined as non-white and non-heterosexual), 28 percent had a hard time finding them, 9 percent would if they knew about them, and 20 percent said no. And 63 percent of readers feel there is not enough diversity.
